An Archival Roadshow
Between March and October of 2023, archival film programs will be presented in venues across the state, highlighting selections from Indiana University’s vast 16mm collections, paired with equipment demonstrations, public conversations and information on the preservation of media.
The programs have been curated by Jon and Jennifer Vickers (Vickers Theatre, Browning Cinema and IU Cinema) and include partnerships with local cultural institutions and communities to create festive screening events.
The Hoosier Way

The state of Indiana has contributed to the health, welfare and cultural vibrancy of the world through its natural resources, unique sporting and cultural events and the hard work, ingenuity, raw talent and goodwill of its residents. This program features well-and lesser-known people, places, performances and stories which make the ‘Hoosier State’ unique.

Inspired Education

One day with a great teacher is better than a thousand days of diligent study. This moving program introduces eight unique, inspiring teachers, educational programs and the students they impact. This selection of films includes the restored 1986 short film The Masters of Disaster, which was nominated for an Academy Award and features students from the Indianapolis Public School 27, as well as Super 8, highlighting high school student filmmakers from North Manchester, Indiana.

The Moving Image Plays Itself

In 1964, Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase, “The medium is the message.” This collage of a program draws from twenty-five 16mm films within IU’s collections which highlight the filmmaking process, exhibition and cellulose material itself, putting the medium of film at the forefront. Part film history, part educational and part experimental film, there is much to enjoy for anyone who loves the movies in their varied forms.
