Bolex H16 Filmmaking Workshop

In addition to curated screenings and commissioned work by renowned filmmakers and students, a Century of 16mm will host a Bolex H16 filmmaking workshop on September 11-12, 2023, the Monday and Tuesday leading up to the conference.

The goal of this workshop is to familiarize filmmakers and novices alike in the technical and artistic process of 16mm filmmaking and then to plan and shoot what is commonly referred to as a camera-roll film.

This silent film will be created in small groups using one 100’ roll of 16mm film, black & white or color, with all edits occurring in-camera and without the benefit of editing after the shoot. While some filmmaking knowledge may be beneficial in attending this workshop it’s certainly not necessary. Anyone can learn the fundamentals of 16mm filmmaking and be a filmmaker!

Day 1 – Session 1
9am – 12pm

Scheduled in the morning of Day 1, Session 1 will familiarize small groups with the fundamentals of 16mm filmmaking and the technical details of the Bolex H16 camera and attendant light meter. This session will cover the essential elements of film cinematography, such as exposure, f-stops, frame rate, film speed, color balance, and latitude, as well as the unique features and functioning of the Bolex H16 camera, including film loading, troubleshooting, and the use of accessories, special techniques, and filters.

Day 1 – Session 2
1pm – 5pm

Completed in the afternoon of Day 1, Session 2 will be dedicated to the development of a filmable script for the camera-roll film. This session is dedicated to brainstorming, script development, storyboarding, and time management in small groups. The inclusion of relevant film examples may also be screened for inspiration. The goal for the end of Session 2 is to have a rough treatment and storyboard for each small group so they are prepared to shoot a camera-roll film the next day.

Day 2 – Session 3
9am – 5pm or until shooting concludes

Spanning the entirety of Day 2, Session 3 is dedicated to small groups filming their camera-roll film. Groups will be aided as needed by the workshop instructor(s) but have free reign to complete their 16mm masterpiece! Groups will reconvene at the end of Day 2 to review their productions, discuss any issues, and reflect on the process and practice of 16mm filmmaking. Exposed film will be shipped to a film lab shortly after the workshop for processing and transfer. Films will then be shared with participants.
